Samurai and Nine-tailed Fox, 1863

Comments - Great image of Bando Hikosaburo V as the samurai Miuranosuke confronting a beauty who is really a nine-tailed fox in disguise, played by Sawamura Tanosuke III. He grimaces angrily as the beauty cowers before him, hiding behind the sleeve of her kimono. Miuranosuke wears a brow robe patterned with pine trees and feathers over his suit of armor, a red sash knotted about his forehead. The fox is dressed in an elegant brocade kimono, her long hair flowing over her shoulders. A handsome design with expressive faces, fine detail in the hair, and soft shading in the night sky. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 9 3/4" x 14 1/4"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Lightly toned throughout with one vertical crease running through subject. Faint thinning and a couple small hole in subject, repaired from reverse. Minor spotting and soiling along in subject and along edges. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
