Iwai Kumesaburo III as an Avatar of Kannon, 1855

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of Iwai Kumesaburo III as an avatar of Kannon, the Buddhist goddess of mercy. She sits on a floral cushion playing the flute with a sweet expression, rays of light radiating from her head. She wears a lovely kimono shaded from purple to pale blue, bordered with water plants and blossoms. Above her head, a stone statue of a menacing-looking samurai hangs suspended by rope. The low folding screen behind her is decorated with a number of woodblock prints, while the wall above is cracked and missing plaster. An intriguing design, beautifully detailed.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 10" x 14 1/4"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Lightly toned throughout with minor remnants from previous backing on reverse. Faint creasing along edges and corners. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
