Hamaji Shogen Mitsukuni (Yamaji Shogen)

Series; Heroic Tales of the Taiheiki (Taiheiki Eiyuden)

Heroic Tales of the Taiheiki - Few other Japanese woodblock printmakers ever matched Kuniyoshi's detail and artistry in the genre of warrior prints. Published between 1847 - 1850, Kuniyoshi's fantastic series, "Heroic Stories of the Taiheiki," or Grand Pacification, presents fifty full-length portraits of famous warriors involved in the closing period of the civil wars in 16th century Japan, just before unification of the country.

Beautifully carved and printed, these reprints come from a 1917 edition published by Yoshikawa Kobunkan. Each features a portrait of a famous character along with a text page with a story about the figure. Originals from this series are difficult to find, so these fine Taisho era reprints are offer a nice chance to collect an early Kuniyoshi warrior image.
