The Whole Nation Living in Perfect Contentment: Empress and Ladies-in-waiting Making Cotton Strings, 1877

Comments - Interesting scene inside the Imperial household showing the ladies-in-waiting at work making cotton strings, sitting around a large table covered with a fancy cloth. Two attendants at left carry in lacquer trays of refreshments while the others busily separate or comb strands of cotton yarn to make strings. The Empress sits at a small table on a raised platform at right. A lovely setting with blooming flowers inside and out, and a gorgeous screen patterned with iris and birds. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A handsome image with fine detail and bright color, including delicate embossing in the white kimono.

Artist - Fusatane (active circa 1850 - 1870)

Image Size - 14" x 28 3/8" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, not attached at the seams. A few wormholes, a couple tears at edges, repaired, blends well. Faint toning, slight soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
