Attacking the Chinese along a River, 1894

Comments - Dramatic scene from the Sino-Japanese War of the Japanese attacking the Chinese along a river. At right, Meiji Imperial troops on horseback and on foot confront Chinese riders as they attempt to climb the bank, sending them tumbling backwards into the rushing water. At upper left, the Japanese fires a volley of shots on the enemy, cutting off their escape, the bullets streaking across the night sky under a full moon. In the flowing river, riders fall from their mounts, engulfed by the roiling waters. Filled with energy and action, with an atmospheric night setting, with the silhouettes of bare trees lining the dark riverbanks.
