Kusatsu: Iwai Tojaku

Series; The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaido, 1852

Kusatsu: Iwai Tojaku - Intriguing kabuki portrait of Iwai Tojaku as a monk or priest looking out from beneath a tattered umbrella partially closed over his shoulders. He grins wildly, his eyes wide as he stares ahead, wearing a blue kimono tied with a gray sash over a red under robe. The landscape of Kusatsu above shows pine trees framing a lake as the sun sets, spreading a rosy glow along the horizon. Nicely composed with fine embossed detail on the white kimono trim and red sleeve lining.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - Approximately 14" x 9 1/2"

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Vertical center fold, now flattened. Slight separation at ends of fold lines, repaired, blends well. Some prints have a few small holes, also repaired. Slight soiling and creasing. Please see photos for a sense of individual condition. Generally in good condition overall.
