The Exile of Shunkan, 1876

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene from the tale of the Taira priest Shunkan, who was exiled to an island after taking part in a plot to overthrow Taira no Kiyomori. After three years, an envoy arrives with a pardon for his two companions, but not for Shunkan. He must watch in despair as the boat sails off with his friends, leaving him on the island with a beauty who has married one of the men who is leaving. He clings to a rugged rock, staring intently after the departing ship, his long hair pulled into a low ponytail over his shoulders. The beauty Chiyodori watches in alarm, waving her hands at her sides as her husband looks back at her. Ichikawa Danjuro IX stars as Shunkan and Iwai Hanshiro VIII appears as Chidori. A lively composition with a diagonal dividing the scene in two and nice large figures. Vibrantly colored with fine bokashi shading in the water and sky.
