View of the headquarters at the Battle of Shizugatake in the Taiheiki, 1867

Comments - Terrific triptych depicting a headquarters during the Battle of Shizugatake between the forces of Toyotomi Hideyoshi and Oda Nobunaga. In the center, warriors escort a captured prisoner to the commander, who is seated on a folding stool beneath the pine trees at left. The prisoner's hands are tied behind his back and his upper arms bound, with samurai closely guarding him. He scowls ferociously, the wind blowing his loose hair about his face. Cloth tent walls emblazoned with a paulownia crest surround the encampment, and other troops march up the hill at right. A great image with lively color and wonderful detail in the expressive figures. A great early warrior subject by Yoshitoshi.

Artist - Yoshitoshi (1839 - 1892)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 28 5/8" + margins

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three panels, not attached at the seams. A few very small pin point holes repaired from reverse. Slight fading and rubbing along edges with some light creasing in subject. Minor soiling and ink offsetting in margins. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
