Series; Twelve Kabuki Plays, 1952

From the Uchida Publisher Archives - We were fortunate to purchase a wonderful collection of 20th century prints directly from the archives of the Uchida Art Company of Kyoto. The classic 20th century prints offered in our auction from this collection are all first edition prints of various designs released by the Uchida company in the mid-20th century. These first edition prints are unusual to come by in a nice group as they were generally sold off as they were produced. This excellent collection was held back and recently sold from the Uchida archives. These prints are a nice opportunity to collect a lovely 20th century print, or perfect as reasonably priced gifts. Don't miss out on these prints, once they sell out, we won't have them again!

The Drum of Hamamatsu Castle - Bold kabuki portrait of the samurai Sakai Tadatsugu beating the taiko drum at the gate of Hamamatsu Castle during Shingen's attack on Tokugawa Ieyasu's forces. The steep perspective forces the viewer to look up at the warrior, who stands bravely, lifting his pants leg with one hand, holding the drumstick in the other. Orange smoke and flames rise in the distance against the gray night sky, with snow falling gently. A great scene from the play "Sakai no Taiko" with a dramatic design and a handsome, subtle color palette.

Artist - Sadanobu III (1881 - 1963)

Image Size - 11" x 9 3/4" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Some toning at edges. Some small tears at edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
