Portrait of a Beauty

Comments - Moving shin hanga kabuki portrait of an actor in a female role, looking down with a distracted expression as if lost in painful thought. The almost awkward tilt of her neck emphasizes her discomfort and unhappiness. Her hair is pulled back into a large smooth bun adorned with a simple white ribbon, and she wears a beautifully embossed red and white kimono patterned with stylized birds in flight and leaves, trimmed with a wide purple collar. Her other shoulder is covered with a blue outer robe with a narrow black collar. The large figure is set off by a soft orange background. A beautifully expressive figure with fine pink bokashi shading around the eyes. Very little is known about the artist Shin'ei, whose works are extremely rare. A wonderful choice for a shin hanga collector or kabuki enthusiast.
