Original Nobukazu (1874 - 1944) Japanese Woodblock Print
Seizure of Shuhu Island, 1895

Comments - Dramatic scene from the Sino-Japanese War of Meiji Imperial troops firing upon the Chinese on Shuhu Island. From a hilltop across a narrow river, soldiers fire rifles upon the enemies, who panic and scatter as other Japanese troops rush at them from behind. Above, several Chinese tumble over the side of a stone tower overrun by Japanese. At center, an officer watches with his sword in hand, gripping the twisted trunk of a tree. Other officers approach at right on horseback as clouds of smoke drift across the landscape. A great composition with wonderful detail, including burnishing in the black uniform in the center and soft bokashi shading in the sky.
