Comments - Fantastic depiction of the Soga Brothers during their night attack on Yoritomo's hunting lodge in their quest to kill Suketsune and avenge their father's death. At center front, Soga Goro grips his sword with a determined expression, his legs spread firmly apart as he leans forward aggressively. At right, Suketsune's retainer Goromaru sneaks up behind him, hiding under a beauty's print kimono. At top center, Soga Juro battles a samurai facing him with a naginata, gripping his own weapon above his head as he prepares to strike. The ground is littered with the men the brothers have already killed, under a driving rain sending up sprays of water as each drop hits. An incredible scene with expressive figures and terrific detail. A great early Yoshitoshi warrior triptych.
