Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
The Fox Tadanobu, 1853

Comments - Handsome kabuki portrait of Yoshitsune's loyal retainer Tadanobu, who is actually a magic fox in disguise, in scene from the popular play "Yoshitsune Sembon Zakura." He hangs in midair after leaping from a balcony after his disguise is discovered, crouching in a fox-like position as he tries to evade a slashing sword. He wears a white kimono shaded in pale yellow, his long hair hanging in locks on either side of his face as he looks over his shoulder with a solemn frown. Blossoming cherry trees frame the dark night sky above. Nicely detailed with fine bokashi shading in the sky and blossoms.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 9 3/4" x 13 5/8"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Some rubbing and creasing throughout subject. One small tear at top left-hand corner, repaired from reverse. Slight soiling with a few stains in subject. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
