Beauties Playing Sugoroku

Series; Women's Activities of the Tokugawa Era

Beauties Playing Sugoroku - Lovely image of two seated beauties playing sugoroku, a game similar to backgammon. The figure on the right is seen through the delicate blind inserts in a folding screen. She wears a white kimono patterned with softly colored blossoms over a red-orange, floral print under robe, the fabric swirling onto the floor around her. She holds her hand to her chest as she contemplates her next move, the elegant lacquer game board at lower left. A small stand beside her holds a miniature house with thatched roof, and the folding screen features a large full moon and blossoms against a beautifully shaded blue and white sky. An attendant brings the two women refreshments from the left. Exquisitely printed with incredibly fine line work, soft bokashi shading, and a subtle patterned of embossed motifs in the background. A real masterwork of woodblock printing technique used to achieve the transparency of the screen. A great Chikanobu subject.
