Conflict under a Crescent Moon, 1899

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a group of commoners arguing in the countryside, a bright crescent moon shining overhead. At bottom center, a rather bedraggled looking young man in a blue kimono leans against his sword, his hair disheveled. The two men behind him glare at each other angrily, one gripping his sword as the other holding a pipe, resting his other hand atop his weapon. A fourth man leans forward at right, his blade stuck beneath the seated fellow in the center. Two circular insets feature portraits of women exchanging sober glances. The softly shaded night sky is framed by graceful willow branches at left. From left, the actors are Bando Shucho II as Kumagai's wife Omise, Onoe Matsusuke IV as Wakasaya Sangoro, Ichikawa Yaozo VII as Kumagai Denjuro, Onoe Kikugoro V as Honjo Mohei, Ichikawa Somegoro IV as Kumagai Tsutae no Susumu, and Nakamura Fukusuke as Honjo's wife Ochiyo. A handsome design with expressive figures.
