View of the Gift of the Emperor's Cup to the Commanders of the Pacification of the Western Province, 1877

Comments - Intriguing depiction of a presentation of cups of sake to the Imperial Army commanders who conquered the rebel samurai during the Satsuma Rebellion. The Meiji Emperor sits at top center in a magnificent military uniform and plumed cap while beauties serve sake and sweets to the waiting officers, each taking a turn in the center. Addition woman approach with offering trays at right, while at left, an officer sits behind a wooden desk. Beautifully detailed with embossing in the white kimono and burnishing in some of the black uniforms.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14" x 28 1/8" + margins

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three panels, not attached at the seams and lightly toned along edges. Minor ink offsetting in margins with faint horizontal creasing running through subject. Light spotting in subject with one area of thinning in left-hand panel, repaired from reverse. A few areas of spotting in subject. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
