Entry in the Second Competitive Picture Exhibition: Minamoto no Yoshinaka's Petition at Hachimangu Shrine

Comments - Fantastic scene of the great warrior Minamoto no Yoshinaka at Hachimangu Shrine writing a petition for divine assistance during an upcoming battle against the Taira during the Genpei War. Yoshinaka had just been defeated at the Battle of Hiuchi, and after asking for divine intervention, went on to win a decisive victory at the Battle of Kurikara in 1183. Here, he sits on a fur skin beneath a tree outside the shrine, carefully composing his request. A retainer watches intently from a folding stool at center, wearing a fine suit of armor and a tall black cap, a quiver of arrows visible at his back. The red torii gate leading to the shrine can be seen through the trees at left. A bold design with beautiful shading and touches of burnishing, which earned Toyonobu a prize at the Second Competitive Picture Exhibition.
