Taira no Kiyomori Gesturing to the Sun to Stand Still

Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting the ruthless general Taira no Kiyomori standing on a verandah, gesturing imperiously to the sun with his fan. He decided that a temple he was having built at Miyajima should be completed before the day's end; when that appeared unlikely, he ordered the sun to stand still until the building project was finished. Grimacing angrily, he thrusts his folding fan out beside him, staring at the last rays of the red sunk as it begins to sink below the horizon. He wears an intricately patterned robe over full hakama pants, a blue cowl wrapped around his neck. Two beauties kneel on either side of him, the woman at left holding a long-handled sake server. A terrific scene from this classic tale, with an attractively detailed setting.

Artist - Yoshitora (active circa 1840 - 1880)

Image Size - 14" x 29 1/2"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three panels, attached at the seams. Lightly toned throughout with some spotting and soiling in subject and along top edge. Faint rubbing surrounding subject with a couple vertical creases. Minor remnants from previous backing in right-hand panel with a few small wormholes, repaired from reverse. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
