Mirror of Japanese Government Officials

Comments - Intriguing portrait of the Meiji Emperor and Empress surrounded by a group of government officials and dignitaries. The rulers are shown at top center flanked by two ladies-in-waiting, with men sitting or standing on a red floral carpet below. Some wear traditional robes and court caps, while others are dressed in military uniforms with black jackets and white pants. The background features a scene of dragons emerging from black clouds, with purple drapery featuring the Meiji chrysanthemum crest hanging overhead. Nice detail in the expressive figures and clothing, including burnishing in the black jackets.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 17 1/8"

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, not attached at the seams, backed with paper. A couple small wormholes, repaired. A few vertical creases, slight soiling and rubbing. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
