Attacking the Castle of Komei, 1852

Comments - Terrific scene from the historical novel "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," a story about the three warring kingdoms in China during the third century. Shiba's army is gathered outside the gate of Komei's castle, poised and ready to attack, carrying an array of impressive weapons and banners. One of the leaders rides in an elegant cart at right, shaded by a fancy canopy. Komei can be seen in the upper story, calmly playing a stringed instrument, flanked by two seated attendants. The impressive castle rises high above the moat, an arched red wooden bridge leading to the entrance arch framed by a fierce lion head. A fantastic image with beautiful color and striking exotic costumes, along with fine architectural detail in the setting. A great subject from this historic tale.
