Original Kunihisa II (1832 - 1891) Japanese Woodblock Print
Courtesans in the Yoshiwara

Comments - Lovely triptych depicting three courtesans and their kamuro or child attendants strolling through the Yoshiwara at night. The beauty at right wears a magnificent black outer kimono patterned with a fierce gray dragon clutching a jewel in its claws, her back to the viewer to showcase the design. The woman in the center is dressed in a dramatic red robe featuring a large rope wrapped around a black anchor, trimmed with layers of blue and green brocade. The courtesan at left wears a blue kimono with a design of a flower cart and peonies, tied with a lion print obi. Lanterns glow softly above a fence surrounding blossoming cherry trees and yellow flowering shrubs. A terrific, classic beauty subject, beautifully colored and detailed with soft shading in the night sky.
