Sanjo Kantaro as Yaoya Oshichi

Comments - Attractive kabuki portrait of the actor Sanjo Kantaro in the role of the young beauty Yaoya Oshichi. Based on a true story, Oshichi sought shelter in a temple after a fire and fell in love with the priest there. The next year she set fire to her own home in a desperate bid to see him again. The resulting massive fire burned a large section of Edo, and she was arrested for her crime. Here she adjusts a hairpin as she looks down into a mirror on a makeup stand. A handsome design from the early years of hand-painted lacquer prints, rarely seen in reprint. Includes embossing in the black obi.

Artist - Kiyomasu I (active circa 1696 - 1716)

Image Size - 12 3/8" x 6 3/8"

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Creasing, small ink stain at lower right. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
