Illustration of a Military Review in Tokyo Attended by the Emperor, 1887

Comments - Handsome illustration of the Meiji Emperor attending a military review in Tokyo. He rides a white horse in the center, dressed in an elegant black uniform, with officer son horseback behind him, and another soldier leading the way carrying a flag with the yellow Meiji chrysanthemum emblem. Troops stand at attention at right, carrying rifles with bayonets fixed. A fine modern building stands on a hilltop at right, with Mt. Fuji rising in the center. Wonderful color and detail in this interesting historic subject, detailed with burnishing in the black uniforms and bokashi shading in the sky. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14" x 27 5/8" + margins

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, not attached at the seams and lightly toned in subject. Some small wormholes and areas of fraying in subject and along edges, all repaired from reverse. Minor soiling and spotting in subject with a couple faint stains near edges and corners. Light remnants from previous backing on reverse. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
