Courtesan and Torn Letter, 1876

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of a courtesan holding a torn letter. She smiles over her shoulder as her companion ties the rest of the message around his neck like a scarf. He frowns unhappily at the beauty, wearing a purple kimono with black panels patterned with writing. Another man watches at left with a stern expression, a pipe, pipe case, and tobacco pouch in his hand. An attractive design with large figures set against a vibrant red background with a simulated black lacquer frame border.

Artist - Chikashige (active circa 1869 - 1882)

Image Size - 13 3/4" x 27 1/4" + margins

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, not attached at the seams and backed with thin paper. Faint soiling and rubbing along edges with minor spotting in subject. A couple small stains in center and right-hand panels. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
