The Eight Dog Warriors, 1884

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene from the tale of the Eight Dog Warriors of an attack taking place under the moonlight in a forest. In the center, a crazed-looking man raises his sword high above his head as a beauty cowers in fright before him, throwing out her arms in self-defense. At left, Inukawa Shosuke, one of the eight dog warriors, grimaces angrily as he watches the man out of the corners of his eyes. His brother Inuyama Dosetsu frowns at right, holding a gun in his extended hand. He wears a gray monk's robe over a black brocade kimono and a fine suit of armor. His shorter hair forms a shaggy halo atop his head, while the rest is pulled back into a low ponytail over his shoulders. He appears to be emerging from a cave, and a full moon glows between the pine trees at top center. The actors are Kataoka Gado III as Inukawa Shosuke, Iwai Matsunosuke IV as Hamaji, Ichikawa Toshimi V as Sahahajiro, and Nakamura Shikan IV as Inuyama Dosetsu. A great design with expressive figures and an atmospheric setting. Includes a dusting of mica across the night sky, and touches of burnishing and embossing.
