Cat Monster

Series; One Hundred Roles of Baiko

One Hundred Roles of Baiko - In 1893, Kunichika was commissioned to create the series "One Hundred Roles of Baiko," chronicling the diverse characters played by the famous actor Onoe Kikugoro V, whose pen name was "Baiko." These fantastic prints feature a large portrait of Kikugoro V in one of his major roles, along with a small scene showing a supporting actor from the same play. These exquisite images were printed to the highest standards, using expensive techniques and materials such as burnishing, embossing, and mica. Beautifully drawn and composed, each print demonstrates Kunichika's skill in creating expressive characters, bringing each role to life on the page. A great choice for a kabuki enthusiast or Kunichika collector.

Cat Monster - Fantastic image of Baiko in the role of a cat monster of Okazaki, who haunted the ruined temple near Okazaki, assuming the form of a cat and waiting to attack young women who came to visit the temple. Here the witch looks back over her shoulder in alarm, a pointed ear emerging from the white hair flowing about her head. The creature quickly tries to turn down the lantern at right, her hand shown inside in shadow. The inset above shows Nakamura Shikan IV in the role of the samurai Tamashima Itto, drawing his sword to do battle with the monster. Wonderfully detailed with embossing in the fur and white kimono collar, and a subtle burnished pattern in the samurai's black kimono. One of the most dramatic designs from the series and a terrific choice for a collector interested in Japanese ghost stories.
