Taira no Kiyomori at Miyajima, 1861

Comments - Dramatic image of the great warrior Taira no Kiyomori at Miyajima watching as the Goddess Benzaiten appears above the white-capped waves, rays of light radiating through the dark night sky. Beneath the sea you can faintly see the scaly form of a dragon. He stands on the verandah of a palace built over the water, grimacing angrily as he looks up at the dark night sky. He wears a fine brocade robe over a kimono tucked into long hakama pants that trail beneath his feet, a fan in one hand. Some of his surprised retainers stare in astonishment while others throw their arms up in alarm at the sight. The butterfly mon or crest of the Taira Clan appears on the drapery at upper right. An intriguing subject with a dramatic composition and fine shading in the sky.

Artist - Yoshitora (active circa 1840 - 1880)

Image Size - 14 1/8" x 29 1/8" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, not attached at the seams. Horizontal center fold in each panel. A few small holes and thinning spots, repaired, blends well. Slight creasing near edges. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
