Evening Cool on the Riverbed at Shijo, 1856

Comments - Terrific triptych of a group of Prince Genji and beauties enjoying the cool evening breezes on the riverbed at Shijo in Kyoto. Tatami mats are spread across a platform set along the river front. The young nobleman smiles happily as he watches beauties wading through the shallow water carrying refreshments, one balancing a tray atop her head. A blind young monk kneels behind Genji, holding him by the wrist. A tobacco set rests nearby, and a large collapsible lantern provides light. A cloud-like border separates the figures from a view of the distant riverbank lined with rooftops, the teahouses strung with red lanterns. A delightful scene of this favorite summer pastime, beautifully detailed and shaded.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14" x 28 3/4"

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, not attached at the seams. A few small wormholes, repaired, blends well. Paper slightly rippled, very slight rubbing near bottom edge. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
