From the Uchida Publisher Archives - We were fortunate to purchase a wonderful collection of 20th century prints directly from the archives of the Uchida Art Company of Kyoto. The classic 20th century prints offered in our auction from this collection are all first edition prints of various designs released by the Uchida company in the mid-20th century. These first edition prints are unusual to come by in a nice group as they were generally sold off as they were produced. This excellent collection was held back and recently sold from the Uchida archives. These prints are a nice opportunity to collect a lovely 20th century print, or perfect as reasonably priced gifts. Ultimate Clearance - $14.50 - Terrific illustration from the kabuki play "Kokusen'ya Gassen," set mainly in China. The warrior Watonai has traveled to China to help restore the Ming Dynasty. He has asked his half-sister to plead his case with her husband, a general. This scene shows the angry Watonai on a bridge at Lion Castle, holding a flaming torch aloft as he examines the water below for a signal. His half-sister was to release either white pigment signaling success for his plan or red pigment indicating failure. However, instead of red pigment, the red comes from her own blood, unbeknownst to Watonai. A dramatic composition with the bold figure of the samurai and the exotic architecture dominating the scene. A fantastic image from this popular play.
