Comments - Beautiful portrait of an Oharame or peasant woman from the village of Ohara near Kyoto. These beauties are known for their distinctive costumes, and can often be seen in the streets of Kyoto selling flowers and firewood. Carefully balancing a load of brushwood and a few flowers atop her head, she wears a deep blue kimono tied with a colorful red obi, a blue patterned apron wrapped about her waist. A white cloth with a design of pine sprigs is draped over her head, and she wears black cloth coverings over her forearms. The orange maple leaves add a lively note of color to the background. A terrific design celebrating this traditional Japanese costume.
