The Third Month (Yayoi), 1858

Series; Ashikaga Silk Hand-dyed in Purple: The Twelve Months

The Third Month (Yayoi), 1858 - Charming image of Mitsuuji, the Country Genji, in a pleasure boat, watching people collecting shellfish along the shore while he waits for the tide to come in. He leans against the roof of the cabin, grinning as he takes a toothpick from his mouth. A smiling beauty leans over the edge of the boat below, wearing a floral kimono and elegant hair ornaments. The beach is crowded with vendors and fishermen as well as people gathering clams, with a few ships anchored in the bay beyond. An interesting subject with wonderful detail, including embossing in the white kimono trim.
