Illustration of the Ceremony for the Promulgation of the Constitution of Great Japan, 1889

Comments - Terrific depiction of the ceremony for the promulgation of the Meiji Constitution. The emperor sits on a platform at right in a plush red chair trimmed with fringe, splendid in his formal military uniform and plumed cap. A dignitary stands on the floral carpet at left, reading the document to the assembled men and women. The empress watches from a small platform at center, dressed in the latest Western fashions and surrounded by her ladies-in-waiting. Purple draperies featuring the Meiji chrysanthemum crest frame the scene above, while a balcony overlooks a view of green hills at left. A wonderfully detailed image of this historic occasion, also in the collection of the Boston Museum of Art. Includes burnishing in the black uniforms.

Artist - Kunisada III (1848 - 1920)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 28 1/8" + margins

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three panels, not attached at the seams and lightly toned along edges. Slight rubbing in margins with a couple areas of staining near edges and corners. Faint spotting and soiling in subject and margins. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
