Sankyoku Music on a Moonlit Night, 1888

Comments - Attractive Chikanobu triptych depicting a sankyoku or "three instrument" ensemble, featuring three beauties playing the shamisen, koto, and kokyu on a summer evening. The verandah opens onto a view of a beautiful garden with a lake, the hills dotted with pine tree and stone lanterns. A full moon glows in the evening sky, amid misty gray clouds. Fine detail in the faces and hairstyles and the elegant kimono fabrics, with delicate embossing in the white kimono trim and soft shading in the night sky. A lovely design.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14" x 28 3/4" + margins

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three panels, not attached at the seams. Lightly toned and frayed along top edge. A couple faint stains and areas of ink offsetting in subject. Slight creasing in center panel with minor spotting and soiling throughout. A few small holes along edges, repaired from reverse. Please see photos for details. Nice overall.
