Autumn Maple Viewing, 1855

Comments - Intriguing kabuki scene of a group of men and women enjoying an outing to view the colorful autumn maples. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikujiro as Oume, Onoe Kikugoro as Oyoshi, Nakamura Fukusuke as Shimada Juzaburo, and Nakamura Tsuruzo. Oume rests one hand atop the pole of an elegant palanquin at left, fanning herself and looking slyly at the rest of her companions. In the center, Oyoshi looks unhappily at a message extended to her on the hilt of a sword by a kneeling man. She seems somewhat confused, her mouth slightly agape as she stares at the letter. At right, Shimada Juzaburo grins happily as he watches her, holding a fan behind his head. A handsome design with an attractive natural setting, with red and orange foliage covering the trees dotting the mountains. Nicely colored and shaded.
