A Japanese Dealer’s Personal Collection - This print and the others posted with our “Japanese dealer” subtitle are from the personal collection of a leading Japanese dealer. We were fortunate to be able to select a small number of fine pieces from the collection of this prominent Japanese print dealer. The prints in this offering are particularly good, rare and desirable designs that this dealer had set aside for his personal collection. We chose prints that we knew would appeal to Fuji Arts clients. Take some time to explore this fine, small group. These designs are rarely offered!

Comments - Dramatic image of the famed warrior Miyamoto Musashi bursting out of a locked bathhouse to which his enemies had set fire, intending to boil him alive. Using a broken wooden beam as a battering ram, he emerges through a tidal wave of boiling water, clouds of steam filling the air. At left, his enemy Shirakura Gengoemon scowls unhappily as his plan is foiled, his retainers tumbling over themselves to escape the scalding liquid pouring out of the bathhouse. An incredible design from the life of this noted martial artist, with wonderfully expressive figures and a fantastic composition.

Artist - Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Image Size - 14 1/2" x 29 3/8"

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, not attached at the seams, backed with paper. Loss at bottom left corner of left panel, a few small holes, repaired, blends well. Soiling, slight rubbing. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
