Comments - Dramatic image of a lone samurai rushing into a Minamoto encampment gripping a sword high over his head during the Battle of Koromo River in Oshu. His hair flutters wildly about his head, a torn shoulder plate flapping in the breeze as he runs. In the center, an alarmed warrior throws his hands out at the side as the smoke and flames from a bonfire drift upwards into the sky. At left, another samurai holds his hand out in a stopping motion as he moves to meet the attacking, intent on stopping him. A general sits on a folding stool at left, holding a bow and wearing a horned battle helmet topped with a dragon, surrounded by retainers peering around a defense of wooden shields. Dead and dying men lie scattered about the ground at right amidst tangled banners and abandoned weapons. A fascinating subject, wonderfully detailed and strikingly composed.
