Comments - Interesting kabuki scene from the play "Shiobara Tasuke Ichidaiki." Based on a true story, the lead character, Shiobara Tasuke, leaves his home in Gumma Prefecture and sets out for Edo with little money, hoping to earn his fortune. Through hard work, he establishes a successful business selling charcoal that eventually became the city's largest. Here, Shiobara Tasuke kneels on the step outside a home, frowning angrily up at the ronin Shiobara Kakuemon at right, who glares back at him with a tight-lipped frown, a spear in his hand. Tasuke wears a short blue coat over a plaid kimono and blue leggings, a blue and white towel in his hand. Kakuemon's wife, Osei, watches from the doorway with a worried expression, holding her hand out in warning motion. A few straw-wrapped bundles of charcoal can be seen at lower left, and snow blankets the ground. From left, the actors are Bando Shucho II as Osei, Onoe Kikugoro V as Shiobara Tasuke, and Ichikawa Chusha VIII as Shiobara Kakuemon. A handsome design with a nicely detailed setting.
