Beauty Cutting off Her Kimono Sleeves, 1892

Comments - Intriguing kabuki triptych depicting two scenes from the play "Shiobara Tasuke Ichidaiki." At right, a young beauty is busy using a hatchet to cut off her flowing kimono sleeves. She kneels over a wooden stump as a cutting board, chopping through the purple fabric. Behind her, men are gathered in a shop interior, frowning unhappily. At left, the beauty helps a group of men carrying large bundles of charcoal wrapped in straw matting. She holds one atop her shoulder as a man approaches at left, carrying a tray of teacups and a teapot. Another fellow holds a paper lantern high, waving his hand at the beauty to stop for a break. A fascinating subject, nicely detailed with fine shading in the night sky.

Artist - Kunisada III (1848 - 1920)

Image Size - 27 3/4" x 13 7/8"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three separate panels. Backed with old paper. Some minor ink offsetting in subject as shown. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
