Viewing an Iris Pond at Night, 1860

Comments - Fantastic kabuki triptych showing a young man and two women on a boat at night. They glide along through an iris pond, the beauty kneeling in the front of the craft plucking blossoming blue iris from the water. The woman at right is dressed as a shirabyoshi dancer, wearing a tall court cap and holding a small hand drum. She wears a lovely kimono patterned with flowers and flowing streams, trimmed with bows and tasseled cords. A soft mist hangs over the water, obscuring the silhouettes of the mansions along the horizon. A beautiful image with attractive color and fine shading, plus strong wood grain impression in the background. Includes embossing in the man's white kimono trim.

Artist - Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864)

Image Size - 14 1/4" x 29 1/2" + margins as shown

Condition - With excellent color and detail as shown. Three panels, not attached at the seams. Slight paper remnants on reverse from previous backing. A few small holes, small tear at top edge of right panel, repaired, blends well. A few creases, slight rubbing, very slight soiling. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
