Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Yamauba and Kintaro, 1829

Comments - Handsome kabuki triptych showing the young boy Kintaro and his mother, the wild woman Yamauba, in an encounter with a woodsman. Kintaro uses a large axe painted with flames as a hobby horse, staring over his shoulder with worried frown as the woodsman glares at him. The woodsman carries his own enormous ax, gripping it with both hands over his shoulder. Yamauba stands at right, holding a small hand drum and a drum stick, eying the man suspiciously, her mouth slightly agape with dismay. Her under robe features a design of leafy vines and her hair falls loosely over her shoulders. A maple tree frames the blue sky overhead. Seki Sanjuro appears as the woodsman and Bando Mitsugoro plays Yamauba. An attractive design with expressive figures, nicely colored.
