Five Present-day Chivalrous Men

Comments - Handsome kabuki depiction of five chivalrous men, present-day otokodate or street knights. The fellow in the center wears a purple kimono patterned with sparrows and ropes attached to noisemakers to frighten the birds away from crops. The fellow at right has a blue violet kimono with a design of a rooster with colorful tail feathers trailing over the sleeve. The men exchange unhappy glances, each frowning or scowling angrily. Notice the variety of hairstyles illustrated. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro, Ichikawa Sadanji, Nakamura Shikan, Onoe Kikugoro, and Bando Hikosaburo. Nice vibrant color in the clothing and shaded background, with burnishing in the black collars.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Image Size - 28 3/4" x 14 3/8"

Condition - With excellent color and detail. Three separate panels. Some light rubbing and soiling at edges. A couple minor creases. A few small holes repaired from reverse. Please see photos for details. Good overall.
