Flowers of Edo, 1864

Comments - Terrific kabuki scene of Ichimura Kakitsu and Kawarazaki Gonjuro as otokodate or street knights, each carrying a large red paper lantern with writing on it. The man at left scowls unhappily as he looks down, a few loose wisps of hair framing his face. He wears a blue kimono patterned with an enormous axe with flames on the blade, over a black undergarment, his upper body tattoo of a dragon visible on his arms. His looks up wide-eyed with a solemn expression. His blue and white kimono is patterned with flowers called pinks, and a dotted sash is tied around his forehead. A purse is slung over his torso and his upper arm is covered with a tattoo of red flowers. A hand-applied spray of pigment that has oxidized to gray is spattered across the dark night sky, perhaps to represent the ashes from a fire since the men don't seem to be dressed for snowy weather. An intriguing design, beautifully detailed with fine bokashi shading in the sky and delicate cloth embossing in the kimono on the right.
