Tokiwa Gozen Fleeing, 1890 - Lovely triptych depicting Tokiwa Gozen and her three sons escaping through the snow after her husband, Minamoto no Yoshitomo, was murdered by the Taira. She kneels in the snow, holding her infant son to her chest and sheltering her second son with her kimono sleeve as he blows on his hands to keep warm. Her eldest child pauses behind her, lifting his snow-covered hat as he keeps a lookout for anyone following them. Snow falls against a pale blue sky, blanketing the ground and trees as a few birds flutter in the overhead. A beautiful print with soft shading in the sky and wonderful detail in the setting and clothing, including delicate embossing in the white kimono trim. A wonderful illustration of this famous tale.
