Samurai Visiting His Mother in Hiding, 1889

Comments - Intriguing winter scene of a samurai visiting his mother, who is in hiding in a rustic house in the mountains. The young warrior sits on the porch, still wearing his straw raincoat and carrying a wooden chest on his back. The samurai's mother stands beside him in the snow, holding a flaming torch and looking back over her shoulder with a worried expression to see if her son was followed. Inside, a young woman offers him a tray with a cup of tea as she kneels beside a spinning wheel. An interesting subject with a beautifully detailed natural setting, enhanced with a hand-applied spray of white pigment to indicate falling snow. Includes embossing in the white kimono trim and fine bokashi shading in the background.

Artist - Chikanobu (1838 - 1912)

Image Size - 14" x 27 5/8" + margins as shown
