Dog: Hata Rokurozaemon

Series; Japanese Heroes for the Twelve Signs, 1854

Dog: Hata Rokurozaemon - Fantastic depiction of the samurai Hata Rokurozaemon, one of Nitta Yoshisada's retainers, balancing on a rocky cliff watching two samurai climb a fence surrounding a palace. The warrior grips the trunk of a pine tree as he leans over the rocky edge, peering down at the men, his faithful white dog below. He frowns at the men, his thick eyebrows furrowed, a white sash wrapped about his head. His muscles bulge as he quietly maintains his perch, a spear in his hand and two swords at his side. In the distance, a row of fluttering banners and standards signals the arrival of troops. Wonderful detail in the expressive figure and natural setting, with fine shading in the cliff and dark night sky. A terrific composition from this handsome Kuniyoshi series.
