Onoe Tamizo II as Daiku Rokusaburo, circa 1820 - 1925

Comments - Fantastic scene of Onoe Tamizo II in the role of the carpenter Daiku Rokusaburo in the play "Kuhenge no uchi." After the theft of a valuable scroll painting of a carp, Rokusaburo tracked down the thieves and attempted the wrestle the scroll away from them. During the struggle, the painted fish came to life and dove into the water. Here, Rokusaburo attempts to capture the giant fish as it thrashes in the water, grasping it with both arms and legs as it leaps above the white-capped waves. Spectacular kabuki scenes involving catching a giant carp are known as "koi tsukami." A terrific image from this popular story with beautiful detail in the intricate scales of the fish, along with a dusting of shimmering mica. A stunning composition with the fish almost springing to life off the page.
