Striking a Young Girl, 1857

Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene from the play "Ami moyo toro no kiku kiri" of a man angrily raising a pipe over his head to strike a blind young girl. She kneels on floor, throwing her arm above her head in self-defense, a string of coins lying on the floor nearby. A beauty rushes forward at left, her hands spread wide in alarm. At right, a disgruntled man sits on a bed behind a folding screen, his arms firmly folded across his chest. The actors are Onoe Kikugoro IV as Goshuden Okuma, Asao Yoroku II as Gohei, Ichimura Uzaemon XIII as Shichinosuke's younger sister Onami, and Ichikawa Kodanji IV as Kozaru Shichinosuke. Sliding wooden panels with shoji insets line the room, and wooden shelves hold rolls of tissues and other objects. An intriguing subject with fine color and a beautifully detailed interior setting.
