Comments - Terrific scene from the kabuki play "Rokkasen Sugata no Irodori," a dance drama about the Six Immortal Poets. The central figures are surrounded by young monks at right, some of whom are dancing about, and ladies-in-waiting at left, who wear traditional white robes tucked into full red hakama pants. The center panel features Nakamura Tomijuro II as Okaji, Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Kuronushi, Nakamura Fukusuke I as Kujaku, and Onoe Baiko IV as Komachi. The right panel includes Nakamura Utaemon IV (inset), Ichimura Takematsu III as Sakuran, Arashi Izaburo III as Kunen, Ichikawa Akanbei as Akan, Ichimura Uzaemon XIII as Kakuren, Nakamura Kantaro I as Tochimen, Nakamura Fukusuke I as both Narihira and Kisen. The actors are presented against a backdrop of wood grain with plum blossoms overhead. Beautifully colored and detailed with expressive figures, fine line work in the hair, and extensive embossing in the white robes. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has this image in its collection. A great design.
