Comments - Fantastic scene of the only battle ever fought on the sacred island of Miyajima, home to Itsukushima Shrine, the great Battle of Miyajima between the forces of Sue Harukata and Mori Motonari. In 1555, Sue attacked a fort that Mori had built on the island. The next day under cover of a thunderstorm, Mori and his three sons attacked the island by sea from both sides, leading to a dramatic victory. Here, Harukata's troops are massed along the walkways of the shrine that extend out over the water, with archers line up on the verandahs of the pavilions as the enemy approaches by sea. The first of Motonari's ships bobs along the dark, undulating waves at left, a warrior in the front of the boat extending his spear out over the water. An incredible panoramic view of this historic navel battle, with fantastic detail.
