Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Battle of Kawanakajima

Comments - Fantastic depiction from a famous incident during the Battle of Kawanakajima between the two great generals Takeda Shingen and Uesugi Kenshin. In the center, Kenshin gallops into the enemy camp on a dappled horse, raising his sword high in a surprise attack on Shingen. Still sitting on his camp stool, Shingen thrusts out his iron battle fan to deflect the coming blow. One of his retainers rushes to his assistance, lunging at the horse with his spear, the wind blowing his hair about his head. Purple cloth draperies featuring the four diamond crest of the Takeda Clan surround the encampment. Great expressive figures, nicely drawn and detailed. A handsome triptych illustrating the famous 16th century war between Kai and Echigo provinces.
